The Paperboy REVIEW

The Motion Picture Buff would like to present a review for the 2012 film, The Paperboy. In this film a newspaper writer returns home to investigate a case with a victim on death row. This film stars Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, and John Cusack.

This is a tough film to review to be honest. The first thing I want to mention I suppose is the fact that this movie has an amazing cast. As per mentioned above the cast is pretty darn incredible. They aren't just a good cast, they have amazing characters to portray and they portray each role perfectly. Who really stands out in this movie is Zac Efron though. Zac Efron plays Jack Jansen in the film who is love with Nicole Kidman's character, Charlotte Bless, who is a 40 year old woman married to the prisoner who is on death row, played by John Cusack. They way Zac looks at Nicole in this movie is just perfect. You can see it in his eyes that he is really in love with this woman, and he would do anything for her, which he does. I also do want to mention John Cusack's performance in this movie. I have never seen John play a bad guy really before, and honestly I don't think I could have ever seen him play one. In this movie though John Cusack plays a complete jackass and pervert. He does it perfectly as well, I was literally disgusted with this character.

Now the tough part to review for this movie is the story/screenplay. The plot of this movie is actually quite intriguing. I was always interested in this movie and the movie did a good job with it. I like how the two brothers get along together and work together to solve the crime. At the same time I like how Zac's character falls in love with Nicole's character. I think it just adds a great element to the film. What was annoying about this movie though was that it was extremely slow and the screenplay seems just sloppy. There are points in the movie where I lost interest and started working on other things, like my homework. Whenever that happens in a movie, I think the movie is just way worse. I like a movie way more when it can keep me hooked the whole way through instead of losing and gaining interest on and off.

So there are a few things I would like to mention before I wrap up this review. These few things would include the cinematography of the film, the beginning of the movie, the narration. Starting off the cinematography in this movie is actually pretty darn good. I like the look and feel of this movie is just perfect for the time zone of this movie. Now in the beginning of this movie it starts off with Zac's character narrating the story, and throughout the film we will catch her narrating the whole thing. I really did enjoy this in the movie because it works for the whole feel of the movie. It kind of works in with how Matthew's character is trying to solve a case. It just feels right for the movie.

Wrapping up this review I will say that The Paperboy is an enjoyable film that works perfectly for a rainy day. It has a great cast that create great characters that you will care for and root for in the end. For the ratings I will give this movie a rent worthy rating, only that though. I am glad I did not buy this movie because it is only worth watching once. You will enjoy it though, that is for sure. Now for the rating out of ten stars I will have to give, The Paperboy, a 7/10 star rating.

The Heat REVIEW

Hello everyone . . . sorry about the delay in this review. It has just been one busy week for me, but lets just get straight to this review shall we? Today I would like to present a review for the 2013 summer comedy, The Heat. This film stars two amazing actresses: Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. In this movie Sandra plays an uptight and know-it-all FBI agent who must team up with a local Boston Police Officer, Melissa' character, to stop a ruthless and violent drug lord. 

First of I want to mention how freaking hilarious this movie is. Oh my goodness, you will be laughing all the way through this movie. The humor isn't that stupid and annoying obvious humor. It is some darn right good writing that you will enjoy for being creative with it. Sandra and Melissa do an amazing job in this film. They take each one of their characters to a whole level of there own, and you are emerged into their characters. You actually do care about them and you want to see them succeed. Sandra and Melissa as a pair together are just absolutely perfect. They have some of the best chemistry in a movie I have ever seen. I would like to see them in another movie together, and this dream does come true because, The Heat 2, has actually been announced so I will be excited to see where they are going to take that. This movie didn't leave it up for another one, but you know how with buddy cop movies, if it does we'll, or is well liked, that they will make a series out of it. An example of this situation would be the Rush Hour series, which actually are pretty good ones. 

Moving on in this review I want to mention a few things about this movie. As I said the acting was great between the leads. The rest of the cast it enjoyable. Of course they are nothing special, but each other scene with these characters have there funny moments to convey. Mentioning that I would say that this movie is a little choppy. What I mean by that, is that each scene that this movie includes serves a purpose and sometimes the purpose is just to convey a joke or a crucial piece to the main plot, but then cut quick to the next scene to convey that next thing. It doesn't take its time in telling the story, and doesn't in my opinion flow smoothly. That being said this movie is still damn enjoyable. If you don't laugh at least once throughout this movie, something is wrong with you. 

The Heat does drag on a little bit with its story and the movie as a whole. There are a couple points where it could have wrapped up a little bit sooner and the movie would have been a little shorter, but yet you still enjoy the humor in those scenes. Now the last couple things I want to mention in the end of this review are the direction and the cinematography. Now yeah its the boring part of a movie that no one really cares about, but with some movies I can notice where I really do enjoy it and then where I do not. I think Paul Feig is a great comedic director. He has done many in his past, one of his most notable is the comedy, Bridesmaids. With this movie he has done a pretty good job at capturing the humor that we all love. Lastly now, Robert D. Yeoman, was the director of photography for this film, and I think the camera angles where just right for this film. In my opinion I just think the way we got the look at our characters can really help, where as if it wasn't enjoyable.

Concluding and wrapping up this review, I mainly want to convey that, The Heat, was an absolute hilarious film that anyone and everyone should see. Sandra and Melissa have amazing chemistry together and you will be laughing the whole way through. It might have some slow points, but it is still a great movie. For the ratings I am going to give it a must-see film rating for sure. You won't regret it. Is it buy on Blu-Ray worthy though? Why yes of course it is. It just snagged that rating, if you don't have the money and really want to get it go ahead you won't be missing to much with purchasing on DVD, I am just saying that it is worth the price of a Blu-Ray. Now for the rating out of ten stars. I will give The Heat a 7/10 star rating. 

The Heat is one of the funniest movies that came out this year, it is actually right behind This is the End in my opinion. Well I hope you enjoyed this review. It might not be my best, I am just spitting this out without proofreading to give you all a review because it has been awhile since one. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey REVIEW

Welcome back to the Motion Picture Buff! I would like to present my review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In this film a young and unwilling, Bilbo Baggins, is recruited on a "unexpected journey" to the Lonely Mountain. He goes out on this journey with a bunch of spirited dwarves who are out to reclaim there mountain back from a vicious dragon.

Well starting this review, I would like to start out saying that it is refreshing to be brought back to Middle Earth. It was just last year that I watched the Lord of the Rings Trilogy for the first time and I enjoyed the journey so freaking much! This movie has a lot lighter tone than the Lord of the Rings movies, but yet it is truly enjoyable. Martin Freeman is seriously the greatest Bilbo Baggins. Yeah sure Ian Holm is a great Bilbo Baggins, but he plays the older version of Bilbo. Martin is the perfect version of a younger Bilbo Baggins, he even looks somewhat like Ian Holm. Anyway it is great to see Ian McKellen again as Gandalf the Grey. Now talking about all the acting in this movie, I have got to mention the dwarves. They were all fantastic for their roles, but the best one of course was the dwarf Thorin who is played by, Richard Armitage. He is prefect for the character he portrays.

Now the story in this movie is pretty good. There were a few issues I had with it. The first one would be the beginning of the movie. I felt like the beginning of the movie took forever. It was literally just so slow. The beginning to forever to pick up and get exciting, about an hour into the movie is where the movie began to get interesting. Then the other two things that bothered me later on in the movie were there were two action sequences in the movie where the dwarves and everyone were running away from bad guys. With both of these scenes they just seemed ridiculous and way over the top. The first one seems like a children's movie and is just hilarious instead of serious. It was one of the things that I really did hate about this movie.

Lastly in this review I would like to talk about the music, cinematography, and direction of this movie. First off the score of this movie is perfect. Howard Shore did a great job with Lord of the Rings score's and I am glad they brought him back for The Hobbit scores ahead. Next I wanted to talk about the cinematography in this film. In the LOTR movies the cinematography was dark and gritty. In The Hobbit films they are a little lighter and not at all gritty. This works for the movies, as they do have a lighter tone to the whole story. So lastly I wanted to mention director Peter Jackson. With most of his movies he is a very good director, for example, King Kong and The Lord Of Ring Trilogy. With this movie Peter Jackson excels again at giving us an enjoyable movie and an a perfect trip back to Middle Earth.

Summing up this review I would say that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a perfect addition to the films that take us to Middle Earth. It is a good start to another trilogy about the character Bilbo Baggins, and his adventures he was in back in the day. Sure its a little slow and over the top in some parts but other than that you will enjoy it pretty well. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey isn't a must-see film. I would say if you are a fan of the LOTR trilogy then it is a must-see, but other than that I would say it works one night for a popcorn movie night. It is worth owning and I would recommend buying it on Blu-Ray, just in case you wanna watch it sometime. As for a rating I would give The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey a 7/10 star rating.

Vanilla Sky REVIEW

The Motion Picture Buff would like to present a review for the 2001 film, Vanilla Sky, starring Tom Cruise. In this film a successful publisher who has it all gets into a car accident, when he tells a jaded lover of his that he doesn't want to be with her. After the accident his whole life takes a turn in the wrong direction.

Before I start this review I want to say that I am going to format my reviews a little differently. Before I used to do one paragraph on negatives and another on the positives. Now I think I want to meld the negatives and positives together and just write how I feel about a movie in different but similar paragraph format. This is just a warning if your a little confused on why it was different all of a sudden. I just want to see how this works, and if I don't like it (or you don't) I will go back to my old way. I will still do my summary of the review at the end though. 

So this movie was quite interesting to be honest. Part of me was enjoying this movie, but then there was another part of me that was like . . . "WHEN IS THIS MOVIE GOING TO END." I found this movie to be very slow. There were points in the movie where I thought of shutting it off because I found no value in what was going on the screen. Tom Cruise though did an excellent job with his character, which kept me somewhat involved in the movie. Tom Cruise has always been a great actor, and he does a great job in this movie, he is what is driving this movie in my opinion. With his character he has to jump from one emotion to the next and to the next. The character he plays, David Aames, has experienced an emotional roller coaster and Tom plays out it perfectly. The chemistry between him and Penelope Cruz is great as well. You can see it in there eyes, that they actually do care for each other. They worked perfectly together.

Now I always like to talk about the story of a movie. In, Vanilla Sky, they had an interesting story, but it was extremely boring and not to mention extremely confusing. Throughout watching this entire movie I never really knew what the heck was going on. From the very beginning I was just down right confused. I was asking myself, "Why is this happening? What does this have to do with the story?" In the end of the movie everything was somewhat explained, but I was still in a general confusion of what happened. Director, Cameron Crowe, really played around with the storyline of this script and in my opinion made the movie so much more confusing than it needed to be. The end of the film, like the last 20-30 minutes is probably the best part of the film because you start understanding the whole thing, but in the end you still finish the movie thinking what the heck did I just watch.

Each and every movie in my opinion has a lesson, a tone, or even a feel to this movie that drives it. Usually you can pick that up near the beginning of the movie, in this movie you don't get what is driving the idea behind this movie until the very end. I like what is driving this movie but I feel like if the movie had hinted at it earlier along in the film, I think everyone would have understood it more.

Summing up this review I would have to say that it is somewhat enjoyable and interesting once you get to the end and start understanding it. It has some pretty good acting in it that I did enjoy, but the whole ride of the movie leaves you with so many questions. Watching this movie you might want to shut it off, but stick around for the end because that it where it gets more enjoyable. I would give this movie a rent worthy rating. It is not worth a buy in my opinion because you are only going to want to watch it once and that is it. Vanilla Sky is one of those movies you should make sure you are paying attention to the whole time though, just to make sure you don't get more confused than you already are. As for the rating I would give Vanilla Sky a 5/10 star rating.

Planes REVIEW

The Motion Picture Buff would like to present a review of the Disney film, Planes. This film is about a crop-dusting plane who has the dream of competing in a race that goes around the world. That is the simple premise of this kids animated film.

Lets begin with the negatives of this film. Hmm . . . well lets just say that there are quite a few things wrong with this film. First of all I would like to mention that the dialogue in this movie sucks. The voices for the characters are just choppy and obviously recorded. Normally when watching an animated movie I forget that its people giving the animated object its voice. This movie did not do it well though in my opinion. Moving on to the topic of the characters I would have to say that I did not give a care in the world about them. They were dull, obvious, and just not interesting at all to me. The last thing I do want to mention is the fact that the story was just obvious and so not intriguing. With this movie you have seen the same formula over and over again. So it was kind of a snore.

To mention some good things that I enjoyed about this movie I would have to say that it was kind of cute. I mean most kid movies are pretty darn adorable. This movie looks a lot like the movie Cars, as it is from the people who made Cars. One thing I also enjoyed was the link between the Cars world and the world of Planes. It worked out well.

Well all-in-all this movie will most likely entertain any child, but if your picking a movie to watch with the kids your watching/babysitting this movie would not be it. So yeah its a kid movie that I would only buy for your kids on DVD, NOT Blu-Ray. For the rating I would give Disney's Planes a 2/10 rating. Its not a good movie in my opinion. I was bored watching the movie.

Shakespeare in Love REVIEW

The Motion Picture Buff would like to present a review for the 1999 Best Picture Winner . . . Shakespeare in Love. This film is about a young William Shakespeare when he was writing his masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet. It goes on the story of Shakespeare short of cash and out of ideas, but then he meets a woman who inspires him to right one of his most famous plays.

Lets begin with the positives from this film shall we? Well I would have to say that I love the script and story of this film. I just fell in love with the story that Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard had created. I loved the characters. The love between Will and Viola was just incredible. So props to Marc and Tom for creating an amazing story, you definitely deserved your Oscar for this film. Moving on . . . next I will have to talk about the acting. EVERY single actor/actress in this film did a good to great job. Some of the stand out would have to be of course Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes. These two had amazing chemistry together. The way Joseph looked at Gwyneth was just incredible. You could just see the lust in his eyes, and he made you believe that he was truly in love with Viola. Other actors who stood out in this film would have to be Geoffrey Rush, Tom Wilkinson, Ben Affleck, and everyone was just great in this movie. I really enjoyed this movie, so I can't mention everything but I suppose for the last thing I would mention is the set direction. Seriously I love the scenery for this film. I felt like I was in the time period and when you forget that this is all actually fake I think that just makes it an even better movie.

Now some negatives I would have to mention about this film would have to be that at the beginning I was a little confused. It took a little bit for me to understand what was going on, but I finally caught up. The other thing I would mention is that the ending I wasn't really sure if Viola died, got stuck on an island, or what happened to her. I know that she was leaving for the new world, but then Will started talking about his next play. So I wasn't sure what actually happened with her?

So wrapping this review up I would have to say that this movie grabbed my heart. I would for sure watch it again and soon. Now the movie is a perfect date-night movie. So if you have a girl and need a movie to watch . . . look up Shakespeare in Love on your Netflix  and watch it will that special girl. Make some popcorn and cuddle up with that girl of yours. If no girl its still a great movie to just enjoy one night. You will love it, if there is any romantic in you . . . you will love it. I will give it a popcorn movie night rating, date-night rating, and out of 10, I will give this movie an 8/10 rating.

Argo REVIEW

The Motion Picture Buff would like to present his review of the 2013 Best Picture Winner, Argo! In this film a group of American Ambassadors are in hiding in the Canadian Embassy in Iran from angry Iranian citizens. If captured they could be killed. So the mission is to get them out undetected, the problem is how?

Now I want to talk about the negatives about this film first. Firstly I would like to say that this film is kind of slow-paced and not very exciting. I mean do not get me wrong, it is a good movie but at some points I was like can this movie move on a little bit? The other thing I had an issue with would be the fact that it was a little confusing. Sometimes I had a little bit of trouble staying caught up, thankfully the person I was watching it with had seen it before.

Moving on now I would like to say that besides the few things I mentioned above I really did enjoy this movie. I like how it is based on a true story. I love the true story and this movie does a darn good job with the story. It may drag on and be a bit confusing but it is still enjoyable. Ben Affleck did a good job with the directing in the movie as well as playing the main character. I like when a movie has a good strong main character and Ben did just an amazing job with it. I really did believe Ben was the character he was playing. He did a great job. Everyone else in the movie did really well, this movie is filled with really good actors and surprisingly they look like the original people. Sometimes I hate when movies pick people for looking like the original people from the original story, but this movie did a good job of picking people who looked like the right people and good actors as well. I also enjoyed the cinematography within this movie. It had the right look for the tone this movie was giving the watcher.

Now picking when to watch this. I wouldn't say that it would be a popcorn flick movie because you have to be emotionally involved in this movie. You also have to make sure you pay attention to it and listen to what people are saying. It's a good movie to watch one night when you want something with meaning and want a movie that matters. For my rating I am going to give this movie a 8/10 rating. I would like to say that I do think this movie deserved a nomination for Best Picture Oscar, but I don't think it deserved the Oscar.

Quantum of Solace REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present another review of another Bond film, 2008's "Quantum of Solace." In this film MI6 agent James Bond is seeking revenge for the death of a loved one and the attempted murder of another. During his pursuit he sets out to stop an environmentalist who plans to steal a countries most valuable resource.

Shall we start with the positives from this Bond film? Well I guess first things first is that Daniel Craig pursues to be the best James Bond yet. He really plays the part well. He just has that look and attitude about him that makes him excel as his character. I could think of no one better to play the part. Olga Kurylenko does a great job with her character as well. Some of her scenes were just amazing to me. I thought she did a really good job. The rest of the cast too did a good job. The Bond films always seem to do a good job when it comes to casting. Moving on I would have to say that the revenge James's seeking makes sense, and the film does a decent job with it. The story behind the film, what is driving the film, is good but more on that later.  The score I am going to have to say I love. The other thing I wanted to mention were the action sequences which were extremely engaging and had me on the edge of my seat. So I will say that Marc Foster did a decent job with this film. I guess it is kind of hard to do a really good job when the screenplay sucks.

Now I want to move onto the negatives. The screenplay is just a mess for this film. Everyone knows this. It just jumps around. I can remember the first couple times watching this I never really understood the main point of this film. Watching it this time though I think I finally caught on with it. I was just so confused the first couple of times. I also am still left with the question of what is Quantum? Do they ever really tell us what it is in this film? I was just so confused with it. Moving on though . . . the dialogue of this film is not the greatest. It seems a bit unnatural and forced.

So all-in-all an action-packed Bond film where James is just pissed. The screenplay driving the film though is a mess and be prepared to get a little lost in the story line. For the ratings I will give it a rent worthy rating along with popcorn flick rating. No way is it going to get a must-see rating. As for the rating out of five, "Quantum of Solace" will get a 3/5 rating sadly.

Dr. No REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present the beginning of the James Bond reviews with the first Bond movie, "Dr. No." In this film James Bond must investigate the death of a colleague in Jamaica. This leads him to a mysterious island, which also leads him to the mysterious Dr. No. Dr. No has plans to end the United States space program.

So shall we begin this with some positives about this film? Well the acting I am going to say I enjoyed. Sean Connery was the perfect James Bond for the age. He had the looks, the voice, and he played the part perfectly. Ursula Andress, Jack Lord, Bernard Lee, and others were also in this film. I thought the acting from each individual was enjoyable. Not amazing, but good enough to enjoy. Moving on I am going to have to say the whole premise of James Bond is quite interesting to me. I love spy mysteries. They are good, especially when they are played out well. This one seems to be pretty good and keeps you interested at what is happening. I will say I did like the direction by Terence Young. I thought it was pretty good, and I felt like he helped create an intriguing film. Oh I did also want to say that the score and the James Bond Theme is just AMAZING. I give a lot of credit to Monty Norman for creating a great score. I loved it.

Other than that though I have a bit about this movie to complain about. I am going to start with the end of the movie. Well I feel like it was WAY to quick. I mean they had about an hour an a half build up to the end and it ended in a matter of maybe five to ten minutes. I just felt like it could have been a better battle between the good and evil in the end.  Then there is the fact that this movie at some points could be extremely slow and boring. I mean there are points in the film where nothing happens for at least 10-20 minutes. Just dialogue and some of it not even that interesting. Their is also the villian Dr. No. Maybe I missed it but do they explain what was wrong with his hands? Like what happened to them?

So all-in-all a decent start to a franchise that is still going on today. "Dr. No" came out in 1962 and "Skyfall" will be released in the US in less than two week. Their have been 23 Bond movies today, and "Dr. No" definitely set the tradition for the Bond films. I enjoyed it and if you enjoy a good spy film, so will you. As for the ratings, I will give it a DVD buy rating along with a popcorn flick rating. A must-see? I am going to have to say no. For the rating out of five, "Dr. No" will get a 3/5 rating.

Black Swan REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present a review for the 2010 movie, "Black Swan." In this film a ballet dancer is the prefect dancer for the white swan in "Swan Lake." She wins the lead role, but as time progresses she becomes more and more like the black swan.

Well shall we begin with the negatives of the film? Well lets just say that in some points of this film it can be SUPER slow and just down right boring. Then there is times when it is hard to distinguish between Nina's (main character) imaginations or reality. There are times when I had a hard time telling if what was going on was real or not. I did also want to mention that at some points this film could just be a little bit to weird. There are parts where it is good, but then there is just the down right weird scenes. So to recap this film could be boring and slow-paced at times, and also that it could get confusing when it came to Nina's reality.

Other than that I really liked this film quite a bit. Natalie Portman was just OUTSTANDING. Seriously if anyone ever deserved their Oscar it was 100% her. This girl can really act the dual personalties just perfectly. Natalie was also really good at the depressed look Nina always had. She was literally transformed into her character, Nina. Mila Kunis is also in this film and she just like Natalie, did incredible. The chemistry between them too was amazing! Now, the rest of the cast also included: Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, and more. The cast was filled with amazing talent and great dancers. Speaking of dancing, everyone did fantastic. The choreography was just outstanding and if Natalie did all her own dancing . . . well done is what I have to say. I usually am not a dancer type person and I do not enjoy watching it usually, but holy shit was this dancing good in this film. I do also want to move onto the cinematography of the film. I thought it was literally beautiful for this film, and helped the film with its feel of dark emotions. So I guess a well done does go to the cinematographer, Matthew Libatique. Now the story of this film I thought was very intriguing as well. It's a girl transforming/losing herself to her character she has to become for the part she so desires. I thought Mark Heyman, John L. McLaughlin, and Andres Heinz created a good script, just needed to fix issues above. Now director Darren Aronofsky was at the helm of this movie. I can say he did a good job with this movie. I was interested and pulled into it, just needed to fix issues above. Yet though he did do a good job.

So all-in-all a good film that is enjoyable. It has its negatives, but then it has it's strong points; one of them being the cast! For the ratings I am going to give it only a rent worthy rating. Its not a movie you need to buy because it really isn't something you will watch over and over again. It's possible that it is a must-see film though because Natalie's performance is just that good, plus it is still rather enjoyable movie. It is 100% a tour-de-force film too. As for the rating out of five, "Black Swan" will get a 3.5/5 rating.

The Green Mile REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present a review for the movie, "The Green Mile." In this film  the lives of guards on Death Row are affected by one of their charges: a big black man who is accused of child murder and rap, yet has an extraordinary gift.

Well I might as well start off this review with the positives. So, the acting in this film is great! Tom Hanks really gives another great performance like he always does of course. He is really Paul Edgecomb in this film for sure. Then of course I have to mention Micheal Clarke Duncan (may he rest in peace). He really is amazing in this film. I have never seen this movie before, and I was truly moved by his performance in this film. He really gave an amazing performance as John Coffey. David Morse, James Cromwell, Sam Rockwell, Doug Hutchinson, Harry Dean Stanton, Jeffery DeMunn, and Michael Jeter are also in this movie. Well done, well done to all of you! I love it when a movie has a great cast that really fits there characters. It makes a movie so much more enjoyable. This movie script does really good with all the emotions that are in this situation that we are watching. You laugh, you cry, your even terrified, and then at one point your even horrified at what happens. So yes, I thought the movie did a good job with those emotions within the film. The story or premise I guess behind this film was also very good. It was very interesting to watch it play out. Now I do want to mention that the sound effects in this movie were awesome in fact. I usually don't mention sound effects, but in this film I actually noticed how good they were to the scene. I thought the sound team did a good job with this film.

Now I do have a negative to say about this film and I really think that this is the only thing I can think of, otherwise this film was in fact really good. "The Green Mile" really just DRAGS and DRAGS onward slowly. This film probably could have been about two hours long, but instead it is over three. This film just moves along so slowly, and in some spots to slowly. There are points in this film where you are just waiting/ hoping for something exciting to happen, but it probably won't happen for at least another five to ten minutes. Their are actually two more things I wanted to mention. First of all, how and why does John Coffey have the extraordinary gift? I really think they should have explained that? Then there is the fact that would a life sentence last that long? I feel like it would be a lot quicker right?

So all-in-all a slow moving movie that has truly phenomenal performances baked into it. For the ratings I am going to give this film a must-see rating because of Micheal Clarke Duncan's performance along with everyone else's. They all do a really good job. I will give it a DVD buy rating too along with a tour-de-force rating also. As for the rating out of five, "The Green Mile" is going to receive a 3.5/5 rating.

Looper REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would finally like to present a review for the feature film, "Looper." This movie takes place in the year 2044. Thirty years into the future when the mob wants to eliminate someone they send the mark back in time to the "Looper's." Joe (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a "Looper" but one day he realizes that the mob wants to close the loop by sending back Joe's future self.

Well lets start out with the positives of "Looper." Well what can I say, "HOLY CRAP!" This movie was fantastic. I enjoyed it even though you go into this movie not expecting what you get. It is just one of those movies where you have to be completely engaged into it to understand. Movies that I freaking love. This movie also has twists to it that you never would have guessed, and it really just does take you on a terrific ride. While on the topic lets talk about the plot/screenplay created by Rian Johnson (who also directed). GREAT job is all I can say. It creates characters that you actually care about. This movie has an amazing plot to it along with a great premise and it will just not disappoint. It explains everything in the end, and does not leave you confused. The twists I mentioned above are just incredible and just SO unpredictable. Actually a story to go along with this. I was waiting for the movie to start outside the theater with a friend and I completely made a random guess as what was going to happen in the end, and I WAS RIGHT! I felt like a super genius. When it happened I looked at my friend and he just laughed. Unpredictable guess and completely random but I got it right. Anyway back to the review, the direction of the film by Rian Johnson was also great. He did a great job with all the action sequences. He just keeps you interested in the film and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The acting within the film is WONDERFUL. Joseph Gordon-Levitt I swear gives the performance of his career. I loved him in this film and he really transformed into Joe. Bruce Willis as "older" Joe, was GREAT. He was incredible with his acting in this film. Especially with what he had to do in the two scenes. It was really believable that he could be the older Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I though them two also had great chemistry with each scene they are in together. Then there is Emily Blunt who does a great job as Sara. What I am going to say here is HOLY SHIT I had no idea she could act. Wonderful performance as a mother of a child. Speaking of which, Pierce Gagnon, played Sid, who was a key character to the story. He did great and played the part perfectly. Everyone else involved in this film too did a great job. Now this film has a telekinetic theme to it, which at first I though was going to rate the movie down, but in reality they pulled it off with this film.

So are there negatives to this truly engaging film? Well I am going to have to say that there are some points where I find the movie moves a little slow and needs to pick up its pace.

So all-in-all a VERY enjoyable film that you have to make sure your focused on. It will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time! Now this film is for SURE a must-see film and it of course then gets a Blu-ray buy worthy rating. Along with that it is going to get a popcorn flick rating. As for the rating out of five, "Looper" deserves a worthy 4.5/5 rating.

Cast Away REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present a review for the movie starring Tom Hanks, "Cast Away." In this film Tom Hanks plays a FedEx executive who was involved in a plane crash in the middle of the ocean. He must now transform himself to survive on a deserted island.

Well lets get the negatives out of the way first shall we? Well I am not sure how I feel about the plot and the flow of the story. To me it just seemed like it was very jumpy, and it just didn't show enough of his transformation on the island. They show like the first couple days of him being stranded, but then they skip to four years later and him plotting his escape now. I dunno I guess really what I am complaining about here is the plot. It just seemed to flow wrong in my eyes. It was also extremely slow in spots. Along with the plot though, the dialogue in this film was a bit unnatural. I think if you have seen this you will understand what I am trying to say. All-in-all dealing with the screenplay . . . it was an interesting premise for a film and done okay, but could have been way better. The only other thing that bothered me was Helen Hunt. Her performance in this film was just okay. I felt like she was just reading lines.

Now for the positives. I am sure you can guess (if you have seen it) that I am going to talk about Tom Hanks performance. What I wanna say here is that this man can act. WHOLY SHIT! I was freaking impresses. He can really give an outstanding performance. That one scene with Wilson (his volleyball) friend. I seriously started to tear up because of him. Well done sir . . . well done. Robert Zemeckis does the directing for this film and I want to say good job also. I loved the angles of the camera and the look and feel he gave to the film. I really did enjoy this film. Where the movie should be slow usually because it is a man stuck on a deserted island, he makes it somewhat interesting (except mentioned above). So props to that. I so love how they kept the film quite in these parts and just made the sounds of the waves. It was fantastic, so props to the sound team too for a great job with the waves. I thought it was brilliant.

So all-in-all a decent enjoyable film that has a great premise but could have been told better. I will say that it is DVD buy worthy and that it is a must-see because of the performance by Tom Hanks. It is really that great, "WILSON!" Anyways for the rating out of five for "Cast Away" I will have to give it a 3/5 rating because of the plot (that seemed to really bother me).

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present his seventh installment in the reviews of the "Harry Potter" series. This review is of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One." In this film, Harry Potter actually has decided not to go back to school, but begin his journey on finding and destroying Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. So panic of course ensues, and the war against Voldemort is beginning to heat up.

Shall we start with the positives for this review? So again, like in almost every "Harry Potter" review, I say that the trio are becoming better and better actors. Well it continues in this film also. Dan, Emma, and Rupert have become fantastic actors. They really are Harry, Hermione, and Ron. They just pull off there characters greatly. It probably has something to do with the fact that they played these characters for 10 years. Rupert does have a somewhat shining moment in this film, and I thought he pulled it off fabulously. The rest of the cast does great and a new addition is Bill Nighy as Rufus Scrimgeour. He also does a great job. Ralph Fiennes is still AMAZING as Lord Voldemort. Now David Yates returns as director again for this installment and he does a great job with the movie I think. He keeps what is sort of a slow-paced story line somewhat interesting. There is one regret I will say later though. Moving on . . . I don't know what it is with the cinematography of these last few films, but I do love this movies cinematography. There is also this one scene that Emma has to narrate a story within a book connected to the story. They used animation to display the story to us . . . let me just say that I LOVED this part in the film. It was just fun, creative, and just entertaining. Now I usually don't like when they add scenes into a film where they are actually cutting thing out, but in this film they added one scene that I loved between Dan and Emma. This scene is very controversial but I loved it. In "Part One" here they picked up a new composer for the franchise and let me just say I now love, Alexandre Desplat's work. He added something to the franchise that was never there before.

We now move onto some negatives from this film. The real main negative is that this movie changes its pace frequently. In some spots it is so slow and boring. You just want something to happen, but when something does happen it doesn't last long. The action sequences are just super quick and rushed which angers me. The film also didn't do a great job of explaining some things, and for people who haven't seen the movie they might get really confused really quick. Now another thing is that this movie is supposed to be a dark film . . . in a sense it is but it just doesn't have that feeling displayed at the strength it should . . . right until the end though. I hope you get what I mean there?

So all-in-all another great edition into the "Harry Potter" series. What is it going to get though? Well of course it is a must-see film, and it is "of course" a Blu-Ray buy worthy. It is a sufficient popcorn flick, and I forgot to mention the score is buy worthy also. You will enjoy this if you are of either the book, movies, or both. As for the rating out of five, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One" will receive a 3.5/5 rating.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present the sixth installment in the reviews for the Harry Potter films, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." At Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts everything has changed. Auror's are guarding the school and Professor Dumbledore is frequently gone. In Harry's potion class though Harry finds a book marked, "This is the property of the Half-Blood Prince." Harry also searches into Lord Voldemort's past to find a weakness of the dark lord.

Well negatives of this "Harry Potter" film? Hm actually there aren't to many . . . one of them being this movie is just a little slow. There are just some scenes that need a little more edge to them, and your sitting there wondering when something exciting is going to happen. The little bit of action in this movie to is just short . . . the action scenes (like Quidditch scenes) seemed rushed. Could be due to fact that this is the second longest movie, and they had to give a lot of information in this film to set up the finals but still. Last thing to mention is that this "Harry Potter film" seems to move away from a tone that we thought the series was on track with. Nothing major though.

We now move onto the positives of the "Harry Potter" film. Well this is another one of my favorites and I have great reasons why. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint 100% give there greatest performance to date. In this movie you can see how much they have grown as actors, along with the other teenage actors that have grown up with the films, like Tom Felton (who really shines in this film). The adult cast too in this film really shines. Alan Rickman is just a GREAT Professor Snape. Then there is Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix, who was BORN to play this part. There is more but I could go on forever here. One other actor though I have to mention is Jim Broadbent as Horace Slughorn! He fit the part perfectly and he really became Horace. I loved him in this film. Now again I touch on something I wouldn't in a review . . . cinematography. I loved the look and feel of this film, it just helped create a better experience. Director David Yates is also to thank for that . . . and in this film I do begin to think he might be the right guy for the rest of Harry Potter. Steve Kloves returns again (thankfully to save Harry Potter) to write the screenplay which I have to say I love. He did a great job, and I love how he made some humor into this film (but this also helps with the unfortunate thing above). In my "Order of the Phoenix" review I forgot to mention the music which for these two films was helmed by Nicholas Hooper. I liked the "Order of the Phoenix" one better, but this one is really good too. He brought something to both films that fit the tone of each VERY well. Thank you Nick Hooper, they are of course must-buy scores! I have them both in my collection.

So all-in-all this is a great addition to the "Harry Potter" franchise. It is actually a good kids film even though the last two weren't actually, this is another reason why I said a negative when saying this film lost that tone of darkness. It is of course a must-see film along with a Blu-Ray buy-worthy. "Half-Blood Prince" will also get a popcorn flick rating. As for its review out of five what will it get? Well, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" get a 4/5 rating.

Van Helsing REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present a review for the film, "Van Helsing." In this movie legendary monster hunter Van Helsing (played by Hugh Jackman) is summoned to Transylvania on a mission. The mission is to stop the evil vampire Dracula and foil his plans.

Well seeing as this movie has a lot of these I am going to start with the negatives of it. Well lets start with the plot and story line eh? First thing to say is, "WOW what a complete mess. The storyline just jumps around and is a complete mess. It is also boring and not at all interesting. In reality it is just creeping and dumb. Stephen Sommers I am sorry to say but your created a poor film here. The scenes are choppy too. Moving onward though I am going to say that the I really hate Kate Beckinsale. She may be good looking and all but nope terrible actress in this film. I would also have to say that really all the acting in this film wasn't the greatest except two actors. It just wasn't the kind that meant anything to me., you know what I mean?  The effects were not that good at all I would have to say, just blah boring. The look of movie too was also annoying because it was always so dark and mysterious (this could also have to do with the direction but Stephen Sommers). It just got confusing and annoying I guess.

Positives that come from this movie? Good make-up on the actors and creating the creatures (well some). Um I would also like to say that Richard Roxburgh did a great job as Count Dracula. There was also Kevin J. O'Conner who played the Igor. I thought he did a good job too. Other than that . . . I can't think of anything. Oh wait I thought the action in the film was pretty well done I guess. Thats all that kept me interested. Actually the score was decent too, by my man Alan Silvestri! He does a good job.

So all-in-all a short review because this film isn't one of the greatest. I was deceived by my sisters when they said this film was amazing. Well the ratings? I honestly wouldn't even give this a last-minute rent worthy, but if you like vampires and werewolf's and fantasy stuff like that you might . . . just might like it. So there is the only way it applies to the last-minute rent worthy rating. On a scale out of five what is it going to get? Well "Van Helsing" I guess can get a 1.5/5 rating.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present his fifth installment of his reviews of the "Harry Potter" series. In, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" it is Harry's fifth year at the legendary school Hogwarts . . . and in the wizarding world there is two wars going on right now. The war against (if you don't want to be spoiler because for some odd reason you have not seen these films, or read the book. Do NOT read the this review) Lord Voldemort has begun. Harry and his friends and allies have to also fight war against the ministry who is reluctant to believe that the dark lord has returned.

Well lets begin with positives of this "Harry Potter" film shall we? Well I really do again have to say that the trio is really progressing as actors, but in this film Daniel Radcliffe is really learning to shine. He has to be this pissed-off Harry in this film almost all the way through and I think he pulls it off greatly. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint also do very well, along with the rest of the cast. Ralph Fiennes again as (now I tell you) Lord Voldemort is just the greatest. He pulls it off greatly. One other person when first finding out who was going to be playing this character made me iffy at what the movie makers of the franchise were doing. Imelda Staunton does a great . . . no correction AMAZING job as Dolores Umbridge, and if you read the books you will understand why. The series is yet again under another director, David Yates, and I think he did alright. There are some other potential problems that could deal with his job, but I thought he did good. I do like the story line of the book but more on that later actually. "Order of the Phoenix" is a lot darker and heavy than the rest of the films, which make sense. It is done with greatness too, and it also starts to set up the beginning of the end battle (that you know is inevitable). The special effects of this film were great as they usually are in a "Harry Potter" film.

Now the weakness or negatives of this "Harry Potter" film. First off, I do want to say that this out of all the Harry Potter films, is my least favorites. The screenplay is firstly helmed by someone other than Steve Kloves (and it will be the only time it is). Micheal Goldenberg decided to helm this film and I want to say you screwed up this film Micheal. I thought the dialogue in this movie was just terrible, it seemed like there was barely a normal conversation in this film. They also seemed choppy. Not this is coming from a fan point of view, "WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED WITH THE END TALK WITH DUMBLEDORE!?!?!" Ugh I was so angry and you will only understand if you have read the books and if you had you will agree with me when saying that they left a lot out. Now back to not fan view point (when the fan point does have some sense to a professional standpoint too) I do want to say that this film seems jus too quick, know what I mean? It all seems to happen to fast. Just doesn't seem to flow right I guess.

So all-in-all of course an enjoyable ride with Harry Potter again. I am going to have to bump this one down though to only a DVD buy worthy, but I will say it is a must-see film. Yes of course a popcorn flick, but no more is the "Harry Potter" franchise in the kids film range. So what does "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" get on the scale out of five? Well I am going to only give it a 3/5 rating.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present his second installment in the series of reviews for the "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." In the Harry Potter's second year at Hogwarts he has to find a way to return to his school after a house-elf tries to stop him. When Harry makes it to school though he finds out that he might not have wanted to return after all, after an old school legend comes back . . . again.

Before I get into the review though I wanted to say thank you and sorry. I have been out for a week on reviews because I sliced a part of my right index finger off and it has been sore to type . . . I only did it if I had to. I have now started to heal, and decided tonight to start making reviews for movies again. (I have a bunch coming as I have had time while on bed rest to watch them). So make sure you do stay tuned. I also wanted to say thanks as I have had a steady amount of page views while being gone . . . I hope this continues as I am back now again and reviewing again. I hope you will continue to enjoy them, so stay tuned and lets get to this review (oh and I apologize in advance for errors, still hard to type).

So lets start with the negatives as to end on a positive note (as this is one of my favorite "Harry Potter films").  Well I really have only two things to say about this movie. One is that it is extremely . . . slow. This movie continues to drag and drag on with no end. This leads me into number two which I am going to say that this could have taken out scenes and made it probably an hour shorter (also a positive here though). It is just such a slow paced movie, which makes you in the end super tired.

Moving onto the positives of this film though. Well this movie is just great, the acting from the kids only gets better. The trio are just becoming great at acting, and we are only on the second film. We get a couple new characters in this film and Jason Issacs, Mark Williams, and Robert Hardy (as Fudge) all do a great job. The voice of Dobby is played by Toby Jones and he seems to become the character, which I absolutely love. The next thing really is that the direction of this movie is great, Christopher Columbus always seems to do a great job at keeping you somewhat interested in this film. The screenplay is very well done by Steve Kolves (again) . . . except of course for the things mentioned above. Which leads me to the fact that this film is definitely one of the most loyal to the book (which is a good and bad thing). Bad because it made the movie slow, but good because fans of the book will enjoy it more. The special effects for this film are very great since there are some huge things that they are needed for. Lets just say AGAIN John Williams nailed it with his score for this film. I loved it and of course it is another must-have score.

So-all-in-all Harry's second year at Hogwarts is another enjoyable ride that you must-see! Is is 100% a must-see and I would have to say go ahead and purchase it at your choice! Either way your going to want to either watch it yourself, regardless your age, or enjoy it with little kids. It is a great story for them too. So on a scale out of five what does "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" get? Well I am going to have to say a four out of five.

The Words REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present a review for the motion picture "The Words" which opened this weekend. In this film a writer at the top of his literary success must realize the price he has got to pay for stealing another man's work.

So shall we start of with the positives from this film? Well I am going to say firstly that I throughly enjoyed this film. The premise of this film was great, that is what had brought me into this wanting to see this movie. Did this movie do the premise justice? Well since I am talking about it in the positive section I am sure you can assume that yes it did. The story line this movie took was incredible and I felt like it flowed perfectly. I like how well the movie went in between each story that it was telling. It kept up with each three of its stories pretty well, and I like how it all connected together. The direction of this film was good too, and that is probably what had helped flow good. The acting from Bradley Cooper was just outstanding, he always seems to do a very good job in any film he is in. Jeremy Irons also was perfect for his character. I loved how good he was with the emotions of his character. At some points you really feel sorry for him, but at the same time you do understand why Bradley's character, Rory, did what he did. The two actors here did an amazing job with there performances and made me really enjoy this movie more. I will not forget though of course Zoë Saldana, Olivia Wilde, and Dennis Quad's performances too. They also did a really good job. I had also like the costumes for this film. Now if I mention costumes for a movie (which is very RARE) they have got to be good, otherwise I would never really mention them. Oh I do want to mention that I also thought the score of the film did a good job of adding the tone to the film.

What really had bugged me about this film was three things that were pretty major. The first thing I want to mention is that this movie had theses scenes where they moved extremely slow. You were sitting there watching what was happening and all I could think to myself was, "Okay now show me the next part, cut to something a little more interesting." I just felt like some shots in the film were too long. The next thing I wanted to talk about was that the only conflict really in this film didn't really seem to shine! It seemed like there could have been a big conflict, but then it didn't become one and the conflict it ran with was never really solved. The last thing was the ending of this film . . . it just seemed to end. Just bam all of a sudden you knew it was going to end.

So all-in-all this film had a good premise and seemed to do a very good presenting it in an enjoyable film. "The Words" just seemed to have some slower parts to it and the ending was a little disappointing. I would have to say it is "DVD buy worthy" its something that you and your girl (or for you ladies reading, for you and your guy) to enjoy which you will. It has a couple good love stories in it that you wouldn't expect. You might want to watch it again someday, but I am not going to say it is a "must-see film." I enjoyed it quite a bit, and on a scale out of five I will give "The Words" a three out of five.

The Possession REVIEW

The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present a review for a genre of movies that I will review few of "The Possession" which is a scary movie. In this film a young girl makes her father purchase an antique box at a yard sale, not knowing that inside the box lives an ancient evil spirt. The girl's father and ex-wife team up to find a way to end the curse upon their child.

Well hm I might as well get the negatives out of the way in this film even though there are quite a few within this film. Well I want to start with the way the film flowed. It seemed to move really slow most of the time. This wasn't just due to the screenplay, which wasn't really the greatest (seemed kind of blotchy), it was due to the direction of this film. There were scenes where the camera just paneled around something, and when it did that it seemed to take forever. I think the director, Ole Bornedal (perviously done: "Nightwatch") was trying to build the scary moment, but when in reality he was just slowing the movie down more. Then there were some scenes that I feel like it should have showed more and didn't or it just wasn't as scary as it could have been. Then there was actually one thing about the script or story I guess that had bothered me quite a bit. There was this very relevant character to the plot in the whole film, then something happened to him but you never really knew what happened to him. Moving onto how scary was this movie, well it was creepy (more on that later) but I feel like they used to many "jump scares" which in a scary movie I feel like they shouldn't use to many of them. Then there was one person's acting in this film that was just on and off. Jeffrey Dean Morgan played, Clyde (the father), and his acting was really good at some points, but then there was sometimes within this film where I wanted to punch him for being so bad.

Now good things from this scary movie. Well I am going to have to say that this movie is a good creepy scary movie. It does scare you, but in a creeped out sort of way. If you know what I mean? So I do give it some credit for that because scary movies I have been watching lately haven't really creeped me out or scared me except for making me jump. This film though had me freaking out from a minute into the film. I did like how in some scene though that the would just BANG cut to the next! It gave the film a more creepy edge to it. Then the acting by Natasha Calis, was spectacular . . . oh she played Em, the girl who was possessed. I felt like she did a very good job being EXTREMELY creepy in some scene. Ugh she just creeped me out. One last thing I do want to say is that this film does have a good story to it that kept me somewhat interested. Could have been better, but wasn't really a negative (almost).

So all-in-all I think that this is an excellent movie to watch for a scary movie night! Probably want to start with it at the beginning, and then continue on with better ones from their on. So if your having a scary movie night, this would be a great film to pick up at your local rental place! That's it though, thats all I would give it for that. On the scale out of five though . . . I would give "The Possession" a two out of five.
