The "Motion Picture Buff" would like to present a review for the Oscar's Best Picture of 2012, "The Artist." In this film a silent movie star meets a young actress/dancer. During this time to birth of talking films begins and say good-bye to silent films. This event sends their careers in opposite directions.
Well lets start with the negatives this time shall we? Well this movie could be a little slow in some points and boring.
Other than that though this movie was just great! This movie defines why I love going to the movies. It has action, humor (good humor), drama, romance, and the brilliant thing about it is that it is SILENT. There are literally only two parts within this film with sound . . . other than that it is completely silent. Just the music to listen to while the actors do there job! Let me just say the actors defiantly do there job. Jean Dujardin definitely deserves that Oscar he got in February. He can really act and what makes his performance so good is that he can pull it off while his voice is not used. I loved his performance so much. Then there is Bérénice Bejo who plays the girl, wow can she act also. I just loved her as her character. She was incredible. John Goodman, James Cromwell, and many more actors are in this film and they all do a wonderful job . . . really! Great job with casting for this film. Now Michel Hazanavicius wrote and directed this film. AMAZING job, amazing job. That is all I can say. Writing a silent movie after decades of not having a single one had to have been a difficult task, but he pulled it off with brilliance. He made the characters perfectly too, because we actually cared about George in this film. Plus the way he directed it just reminded us why we all love to go to the movies. This film just had so many elements from older movies that I love that just kept me watching and enjoying this film. So yes Michel definitely deserved that Oscar he got too. Cinematography in this film was also incredible. Now it may have been in black and white, but this film still had a certain feel and look to it that I enjoyed very much, so GREAT job, Guillaume Schiffman. The score for a silent film had better be important and EXCELLENT right? Well for "The Artist" if defiantly was for sure. It just was the perfect tones and music in the right moments in the film. Ludovic Bource was at the helm of the score for this film and he did it perfectly so definitely a great job by him. So this is a silent movie right about silent movies becoming obsolete. I loved it because it takes you back to when movies were innocent romances and just actual fun. Not to discredit movies to day, but like I said, "This film reminds you why we all love movies in the first place.
There is a question I must answer about this film though. Do I think it deserved the Oscar for Best Picture? This is a (and always is) a tough and difficult question to answer. I am going to have to say no. I saw "The Descendants" which was also nominated, and I in fact love that movie more. It does for sure deserve the other awards it received I believe so far, and it definitely at least deserved the nomination for Best Picture.
So all-in-all this film is just a fun and enjoyable ride that your going to lose yourself in. It actually is a good date-night film, but for sure Blu-ray buy worthy. It is 150% a must-see film that you will enjoy. As for the rating, "The Artist" is going to receive a worthy 5/5 rating.
